In the realm of graphic design, the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been nothing short of revolutionary. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the new Photoshop AI feature, generative fill, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on this groundbreaking technology from a graphic designer's perspective.

The Power of AI in Photoshop

The integration of AI into the Photoshop workflow is incredibly beneficial. It offers a level of convenience and efficiency that was previously unimaginable. However, the effectiveness of this tool largely depends on the nature of the work at hand.

For tasks that require precision, such as creating detailed illustrations or photorealistic images of faces or animals, the AI still has some way to go before it becomes a viable option. Similarly, when it comes to creating minimal art or logos without a specific design in mind, the AI can be a bit of a gamble. It's like rolling the dice on every aspect of the design, especially considering that the output is already rasterized.

AI as a Tool for Idea Generation

Despite these limitations, the Photoshop AI's generative fill is excellent for generating ideas and variations quickly. These initial outputs can then be traced or recreated into something more polished. This feature is particularly useful for designers who need to produce multiple design options in a short amount of time.

The Real Strength of AI: Quick Changes in Photos/Images

Where the AI truly excels is in making quick changes to photos and images. A prime example of this is the thumbnail video by Mr. Beast, where the AI was used to swap out assets in photos, change environments, adjust aspect ratios, and create assets to use like patterns or textures.

This capability makes the AI a fantastic tool for graphic designers. It's not something that will replace the need for human artistry but rather a tool that can enhance and streamline the design process.

AI as a Creative Assistant

Personally, I've found the AI to be incredibly helpful in shaping my designs. As someone who isn't particularly adept at hand-drawn illustrations, I used to rely on finding similar images online and then warping and tracing them. Now, with the AI, I can generate unique starting points for my designs, free of charge.

The Future of AI in Graphic Design

The technology behind Photoshop's AI is still growing and evolving. It's an exciting tool that I'm eager to incorporate into as many use cases as possible. While I'd love to be able to instantly design a logo or code a custom website using AI, the reality is that for tasks requiring a high level of specificity, human input is still necessary... at least for now.
